But there’s also a large group of open source software and partner foundation model providers, as well as a growing list of data providers to support. The newly announced Vertex AI Extensions aim to help customers enable foundation models to act based on real-time data connections. And for the two use cases seeing the greatest uptick in adoption, there were updates to Vertex AI Search and Vertex AI Conversation. Other announcements included new versions of Google’s foundation models, with quality, performance and tuning improvements of Palm, Imagen and Codey.
Microsoft has also invested in an open source project named the Semantic Kernel, which aims to bring LLM orchestration, such as prompt engineering and augmentation, to C# and Python developers. It’s similar to LangChain, a popular open source library to interact with LLMs. With an exclusive partnership with OpenAI, Microsoft is ahead of its competitors in the generative AI game. Azure OpenAI is one of the mature and proven GenAI platforms available in the public cloud. It should add the ability to store and search vectors in BigQuery and BigQuery Omni. For now, customers will have to rely on the pgvector extension added to Cloud SQL or use a third-party vector database such as Pinecone.

The amount of content produced by and highlighting AI is overwhelming right now, but it’s a safe bet that this is going to stick around. As such, they introduced new governance and privacy controls to protect customer data when customizing foundation models. VPC Security Controls, customer-managed encryption keys and Access Transparency are all generally available for generative AI on Vertex and coming in the next month for Search and Conversation.
I’m going to be honest and say that out of all of the companies diving head first into AI tools and technology, Google has been the one that I trust the least. Regarding AI, there might be some unease about intelligent systems accessing personal data, but the company assures that Workspace data won’t be used to enhance their Yakov Livshits Duet AI. Any interaction with it, like using its “Help me write” tool or getting AI-driven spelling and grammar suggestions, is either anonymized or aggregated – meaning it’s disconnected from any of your personal identifiers. We spoke last week about how grammar fixes would remain on Google’s servers for up to six months.

Following the Bard debacle, Google doubled down on its commitment to ensuring that its AIs don’t turn out like Miucrosoft’s. “AI is no replacement for the ingenuity, creativity, and smarts of real people,” Johanna Voolich Wright, VP of Product at Google Workspace, wrote on Tuesday.

You’re given a handful of tasks and a countdown timer, in this case 1hr, will begin when you start the lab. The curated list of readings is quite comprehensive, and you could easily exceed the estimated 45 minutes of time to complete the modules if you read through every one. But it is nice to have such a large list of resources compiled in one place.
The new AI-enabled Workspace suite is expected to roll out to English language users in the US by the end of the month with additional languages and regions arriving in the near future. This means that Google’s multimodal foundation models, including PaLM, Imagen, Codey, and Chirp, can be integrated into applications with a few lines of code. Vertex AI allows you to select the one that best suits specific use cases by categorizing the models based on their content generation capabilities. Generative AI support on Vertex AI provides users access to Google’s extensive generative AI models.
